The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action is rebuilding its house, creating a permanent residence and center in opposition to the Trident nuclear weapons system. Foundations have been poured and wall construction will begin on May 3, 2008. On April 6, 2005, the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action residence burned, ending 27 years of use as a center for peace and nonviolent direct action. Members of the organization decided to rebuild using energy efficient and “green” methods, using renewable and sustainable resources. The project is being undertaken almost entirely by volunteers and financed by donations from members and supporters of the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action. What: Members of the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action begin wall construction using a block system made of 85 % mineralized wood chips from recycled wood and 15 % Portland cement and fly ash. A representative for the FasWall building system will be instructing Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action members and supporters on how to build exterior walls. When complete, the house will have 2,450 square feet of living space. When: May 3, 2008. 10 AM to 3 PM. Members will be learning construction techniques using insulated building blocks, sized 24”X 12” wide X 8” high and made of recycled material. Where: Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, 16159 Clear Creek Road N.W., Poulsbo, Washington. Dr. David Hall, member of the building committee for Ground Zero stated, “The Trident submarine system is the closest thing to a doomsday machine that humankind has ever built. We know the Trident base will be here for awhile. Our house is a statement to the Navy and peace-loving members of our community that we are also here to stay. We will be here as long as it takes for nuclear disarmament here and around the world.” The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action was founded in 1977. The center is on 3.8 acres adjoining the Trident submarine base at Bangor, Washington. The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action offers the opportunity to explore the roots of violence and injustice in our world and to experience the transforming power of love through nonviolent direct action. We resist all nuclear weapons, especially the Trident ballistic missile system. The next planned nonviolent direct action at the Trident submarine base at Bangor will be in honor of Mother’s Day on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
