A prison comic: “Why is my Grandma in Prison?”

Some of you reading this will remember Susan Crane as a longtime peacemaker and nuclear resister, and member of the Disarm Now Plowshares action in 2009. On that fateful day she and four other activists entered the high security nuclear warhead storage area at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Washington in the early morning hours of November 2nd, All Souls Day, to call attention to the illegality and immorality of the existence of the first strike Trident weapons system. Crane and her comrades were given significant prison sentences for their nonviolent action for a world free of the threat of nuclear omnicide.

Since that time Crane has continued to work for a better world and has been active at the Redwood City Catholic Worker for many years. As is the case with many who believe so passionately about abolishing nuclear weapons, Crane keeps acting up, and most recently was arrested, tried, and convicted for her nonviolent direct action against US nuclear weapons stationed at Germany’s Büchel Air Force base in Germany.

Susan Crane and fellow resister Susan van der Hijden have been making the most of their time at Rohrbach prison. They collaborated on their desire to create something special for Susan’s grandchildren… and this wonderful comic – “Why is my Grandma in Prison?” – is the result! The artwork is by Susan van der Hijden.

Thanks to Jack and Felice Cohen-Joppa at The Nuclear Resister where this was originally published. You can keep up with the latest on Susan Crane, along with many other resisters, at The Nuclear Resister.
